We all know that email marketing is a timeless marketing tool, one that is guaranteed to reach your audience wherever they are. However, merely sending emails is not enough. Instead, businesses should be understanding the metrics that gauge your email campaign’s success. This way, your emails are constantly evolving and shaping into marketing that hits the home run.

In this blog post, we’ll be delving into the most important email marketing metrics, explaining what they are, why they triumph, and what the industry standard is (based on Transond’s data collected since 1 October 2023).

Open rate

What is it?

The open rate is the percentage of recipients who opened your email after receiving it.

Why does it matter?

When it comes to an open rate, the higher the better. A high open rate indicates that you’re doing something right, especially with your subject line. The goal is to compel your audience to explore your content, and the best way to encourage this is by writing engaging, personal subject lines. Learn how to write eye-catching subject lines by reading our blog post ‘Get Your Customers Hooked - Nailing Your Subject Line’.

Monitoring this metric provides insights into the effectiveness of your email's first impression.

Click-through rate (CTR)

What is it?

CTR is the percentage of recipients who clicked on one or more links in your email.

Why does it matter?

CTR gives you insight into a recipients’ interest and engagement in your emails. Similar to an open rate, businesses should be aiming for a high click-through rate, as this means that your email content is resonating with your audience.

By analyzing this metric, you can gain a clear picture of which elements of your emails are capturing the most attention, and which ones need to be changed.

Hard bounce rate

What is it?

Hard bounce rate represents the percentage of emails that could not be delivered to the recipient's inbox, for whatever reason.

Why does it matter?

Unlike the previous two, a high bounce rate is not a good thing. It can negatively impact your sender reputation and deliverability, which can have a significant knock-on effect. If your emails aren’t reaching your audience, then what’s the purpose of creating them?

Hard bounces occur when emails are undeliverable due to permanent issues such as invalid email addresses or domain errors. Accumulating hard bounces can trigger spam filters, causing legitimate emails to be flagged, and in a time when communication is key, mitigating hard bounces becomes pivotal to maintaining relationships.

Unsubscribe rate

What is it?

Unsubscribe rate is the percentage of recipients who opt out of your email communications.

Why does it matter?

While it's natural to see some unsubscribes, monitoring this metric helps you understand when your email frequency, content, or targeting may need adjustment. If your unsubscribe rate is rising quickly, the chances are you’re doing something wrong.

Consider the times when you yourself unsubscribed from a brand’s communications - why was it? Were you seeing their name in your inbox too often? Was the content uninteresting?

If a subscriber decides they no longer want to receive communication from you, you must respect their decision if you want to continue a long-term relationship.
